We just wrapped up a great project for a client who had recently purchased a condo and wanted to do something more intentional with their dining room.
The space was nice—but the back wall wasn’t doing anything. No storage, no focal point… just empty.
So the goal was simple: turn that wall into something useful that also looks like it belongs there.
Starting Point: IKEA Billy Cabinets
We used IKEA Billy cabinets for this project.
Most people know them—and we actually get a lot of calls just to assemble IKEA furniture.
That wasn’t the point here.
The difference wasn’t assembly—it was turning them into a true built-in.
Billy cabinets are a great starting point because they’re:
- clean
- flexible
- much less expensive than custom cabinetry
And that last point matters.
Because while the install and finish work isn’t “cheap,” it’s still well below the cost of fully custom cabinetry or millwork—and gets you very close to the same look.
Step 1: Build the Base
First, we built a continuous base across the wall.
This:
- gets everything level
- raises the cabinets to the right height
- makes the whole wall feel like one piece
Without this step, it’s furniture.
With it, it starts to feel built-in.
Step 2: Lay Out the Wall
We designed a layout that balances storage and display:
- tall cabinets on both sides (hidden storage)
- open shelving in the middle
- drawers along the bottom
Once assembled, everything was installed and tied together so it reads as one clean system—not separate units.
Step 3: Make It Look Built-In
This is where the transformation happens.
We:
- removed the existing crown and base
- installed the cabinets
- reinstalled the trim across the front
Then we painted the new base and trim to match the IKEA cabinet color.
That:
- removes visual breaks
- blends everything together
- makes it feel like it was always there
Final Result
The wall went from empty to a full feature:
- real storage
- a strong focal point
- a clean, finished look
And most importantly—it doesn’t look like IKEA anymore.
It looks built in.
Why This Works
This approach hits a great middle ground:
- avoids full custom cabinet pricing
- still delivers a high-end look
- focuses investment on installation and finish
It’s a smart way to get the look of custom—without going all the way to custom.
Sometimes the best solutions come from thinking a little “outside the box”… even when we’re working with boxes.
If you’ve got a space that isn’t quite working, there are often more practical options than you might think. Let’s talk through ideas that fit your home and your budget.
