Winter brings more than just cooler temperatures and roaring fires; it also brings bad weather and unsightly utility bills. To help ease the blow, we have listed some tips that you can do to help reduce your energy costs and keep your home warmer – sorry, we can’t do anything about the bad weather.

Make sure your windows are properly sealed. A properly sealed window will not only help keep your home warmer, it will also help reduce your heating bill.

Weather proof your entryways. Applying weather stripping around your doors will help keep the cold air out and the warm air in.

Install a programmable thermostat. This will help regulate the temperature in your home no matter where you are. Plus, programmable thermostats can potentially save you up to $100 a year!

Vacuum your refrigerator coils. By keeping this area clean and dust free, you can help reduce your refrigerator’s energy usage by 25 percent!

Close vents. If there’s an area of your house that you hardly ever use, consider closing the vent – there’s no need to heat a room you are rarely in.

Open your drapes during the day and close them at night. This will help you heat your home naturally during the day and keep it nice and toasty at night.

Downgrade your light bulbs. Lighting accounts for about 10% of your electric bill, so consider switching your bulbs from 100 watts to 75 watts. You’ll save yourself money without losing much light.

Due to the safety risks involved in home improvements and repairs, House Doctors recommends that home owners hire a professional home repairman to handle the home improvement projects and tips listed above.  If you need assistance making any of these upgrades, our team of experts will prescribe the solution your home needs to become energy efficient.
